1930s Giordano Aldrighetti helmet. The sticker on the
helmet has an eagle with IR (Italia Regia) at the time when there was
still a Kingdom in Italy. The story of this driver is in Piloti che
Gente. Aldrighetti's greatest success in motorcycling came when he won
the 1937 Italian GP riding for the works Gilera team, setting a new lap
record of 111 mph (179 km/h) in the process. He crashed heavily at the
1938 Swiss GP and was forced to retire from motorcycle racing due to his
injuries. He turned to car racing by joining the Alfa Corse team for
1939. Driving an Alfa Romeo 158, he competed in the Tripoli GP, where he
retired. In August he was entered for the Coppa Acerbo, held at the
Pescara Circuit in Italy. He crashed heavily in practice and was thrown
out of his burning car; although he appeared to have survived the
accident, he died that night from internal injuries. This cream helmet
is signed and complete with goggles. Complete with letter from Sergio
Scaglietti. |

1950s Prince Bira helmet. An original Herbert Johnson
racing helmet, in typical shellac construction painted in trademark
blue. This helmet has the face shield/visor and shows wear. According to
information supplied by the original vendor this helmet was given by
Bira to his mechanic Les Wilson. It's offered together with a signed
photograph given by Bira to Wilson. What a wonderful item from the only
F1 driver to originate from Bangkok, Thailand (formerly Siam). Prince
Birabongse was known mostly for racing E.R.A. & Maserati (8CM, 4CL,
4CLT/48), though he also raced for Riley, Osca, Delage & Gordini from
1935-1954. Above is a photo of Prince Bira wearing an identical helmet
at the 1954 French GP at Rheims while driving the Maserati 250F.

Baron Emmanuel 'Toulo' de Graffenried |
|
1950s Baron Emmanuel 'Toulo' de Graffenried helmet.
Toulo began his racing career in 1936, driving his own Maserati
voiturette. He won the 1949 British Grand Prix in a Maserati 4CLT/48, a
year before the FIA World Championship began. In 1951 he drove the Alfa
Romeo 159. He continued to drive in occasional races over the next six
years, with his best finish being 4th place at the 1953 Belgian GP.
Following his retirement from racing, de Graffenried earned his keep
operating his car dealership in Lausanne, selling Alfa Romeo,
Rolls-Royce & Ferrari automobiles. He also acted as stunt double for
Kirk Douglas during the filming of 'The Racers'. The b/w picture shows
the Baron in a Maserati A6GCM at Silverstone during an F2 race, bearing
the very same vintage Swiss Coat of Arms as used on his helmet. This
hard shell Geno helmet with leather ear and chin straps was made in
France. It is accompanied by a signed 1/16 scale model of the Maserati
250F - similar to the car he drove in 1955 & 1956. It is unclear if he
added this sticker on at a later date, but the helmet shows wonderful
patina.
